HBO Confirms "Looking" Has Been Cancelled, Promises Special Will Wrap Things Up

After Sunday night's Season 2 finale of HBO's Looking, many viewers were left wondering: Was this a season finale or a series finale? Months earlier, HBO had renewed its other Sunday dramedies–Girls for a fifth season and Togetherness for a second–but mum was the word when it came to the fate of Patrick, Dom (+his peri peri chicken), Augustine and Doris.

Last night, writer Kevin Sessums broke the show's fate on his Facebook page:

Looking managed to improve upon its slow-to-the-point-of-boring first season by introducing new characters—like Daniel Franzese's Eddie—and exploring the depths of the friendships on the show, particularly that of Dom and Doris.

A stand-out moment from Sunday's finale saw the pair finally reconcile their fight from earlier in the season against the backdrop of the San Fransisco skyline. “I do kind of need to break up, Dor," Dom tells her. "We do. You did the most generous thing that anyone’s ever done for me, but I really need to try this on my own. However I can.”

The show has never been a ratings juggernaut—this season averaged just under 250,000 viewers per episode—but neither was Girls or Togetherness, and both have managed to live on.

In fact, The New York Times even touted Looking as the "best of the bunch" amongst HBO's Sunday line-up.

UPDATE:  HBO has confirmed Looking will not be back for another season, but fans will get to see Dom, Patrick and Agustin one more time:

"After two years of following Patrick and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love and lasting relationships, HBO will present the final chapter of their journey as a special," the network said in a statement. "We look forward to sharing this adventure with the show's loyal fans."
