Ted Cruz Suggests He'd Bring Back "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" As President
Ted Cruz continued displaying his contempt for legislation that guarantees LGBT equality while speaking at a private event in Iowa Monday, suggesting he’d consider bringing back “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as president.
Asked to comment on the military’s recent decision to allow transgender members to serve openly, Cruz said:
"How about having the military focusing on hunting down and killing the bad guys...instead of treating it as this crucible for social justice innovations. We’ve lost sight of what their job is and that’s what we need to get back to."
The Washington Post notes that Cruz was also asked about the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that barred gay people in the military from disclosing their sexual orientation. That archaic law, as you know, ended under the Obama administration in 2011.
"We shouldn't view the military as a cauldron for social experiments," Cruz said, claiming he’d “listen to the expert judgement of the generals and admirals” to make new laws that promote “good order and discipline.”
Cruz’s “moral” crusade against LGBTs has won him favor with Evangelicals. According to recent polls, he currently ranks number three among GOP presidential hopefuls behind Donald Trump and Ben Carson.
