Fly The (Gay) Friendly Skies: Drag Queen Stewardesses Record Flight Safety Video

Airlines have done a lot to make their flight-safety videos more eye-catching, but we think we found the perfect approach: Drag queen stewardesses.

Israeli artist Elia Chechick shot this flight safety video for the ficticious "Priscilla Airlines," and its sickening in all the right ways. The video was a final project for art student Chechick, who was tasked with giving an airline a unique brand.

"I remember when Priscilla Queen of the Desert came out in theaters," she told Ynet."I watched the movie plenty of times when I was a kid, and it provided me with the inspiration for the project in all of its elements.

Basing the safety song on "Let's Have a Kiki," was a stroke of genius.

"I have watched drag since I was 16. I wanted to bring it into an official place, like an airline. It was interesting to make an airline accessible to the trans community, with a summer package where you could book a few destinations and fly from Pride parade to Pride parade."

The practical aspects of shooting a scene in an airplane were big obstacles to overcome, says Chechick.

"There aren’t a lot of airlines based in Israel—I just tried to contact all the major companies, private planes, and anything else I could find. We got a lot of 'no'. It took us a few months to find a place."

Ultimately, El Al let her team have access to a flight-attendant training craft. "[They] were really great about it, and supported the shoot for 6 hours straight—and for free!"
