“You need to change your shirt or go home,” those were the options given to Chesnee High School student Briana Popour after proudly wearing a t-shirt that read "Nobody Knows I'm a Lesbian."

Popour says she was pulled out of class into the front office where she was told her shirt was disruptive and promptly issued a suspension.

“I’ve worn this shirt before and nobody’s ever said anything,” Popour told South Carolina news station WSPA. “When I said something to [my administrator] about the handbook, he said “well, not everything is in the handbook."

The district sent an email to WSPA telling them that the shirt was “offensive and distracting” with links to the dress code policy which states, “clothing deemed distracting, revealing, overly suggestive or otherwise disruptive will not be permitted.”

Briana mother, Barbara Popour, was quick to defend her daughter. “There’s other stuff that supposedly could be against religion, against anything else, but that wasn’t listed in [the administrator's] comment,” she noted.

Briana kept her cool throughout the situation, realizing that her situation is a symptom of a much larger problem.

“Isn’t that what school is supposed to teach you?" she asked. "To be happy with who you are? Maybe people will be more comfortable showing who they are because you should be able to wear what you want to wear."
