America has fallen in love with the story of Jacob Lescenski, the straight Nevada high-schooler who took his gay best friend, Anthony Martinez, to prom.

The best buds have been covered nationally, and even appeared on Ellen, where they each received a $10,000 scholarship.

But there was one sour note in the otherwise sweet story: When Anthony's aunt Jennifer Sandoval went to order a cake for a pre-prom celebration, she was turned down by the Walmart bakery in her neighborhood.

Sandoval had requested "You're gay, he's straight, you're going to prom, you couldn't have had a better date" in frosting—a play on the banner Jacob shared in his promprosal.

But the bakery refused to write the word "gay."

Sandoval, who was dumbfounded by the refusal, asked to speak to a manager.

"[The] supervisor takes my phone, looks at it, and was like stuck for a minute, and she was like, 'Okay, I'm sorry, we can't use this'," Sandoval told Fox 5 KVVU. "[I said,]'You're the supervisor. Why can't I use this? I don't understand. It's one word. It's gay,'"

Rather than get into a whole thing with the bakery, Sandoval opted for  "You matter, Prom Kings" on the cake.

Walmart claims "proper management wasn't contacted" during the incident and that "nowhere in their store's policy does it say the word 'gay' can't be written on a cake":

The store offered to provide a cake with her requested message, but it was too late at that point.

"It wasn't hurtful. It was to make my nephew happy, to see a smile on his face," says Sandoval. "I love that smile, to see that smile, that's all I wanted, and I'm disappointed. I really am."
