Donald Trump's Gay Billionaire Pal Peter Thiel Just Got Married

Thiel donated $1.25 million to Trump's presidential campaign. Wonder what Donald got him as a wedding present?

Billionaire Peter Thiel, who spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention, got married over the weekend to longtime boyfriend Matt Danzeisen. The ceremony was something of a surprise, as guests thought they were coming to celebrate the venture capitalist's 50th birthday.

Thiel an early investor in Facebook and co-founder of PayPal, endorsed Donald Trump during the campaign and spoke on the last day of the Republican National Convention. He told the crowd “I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican. But most of all, I am proud to be an American."

In his remarks, he called issues like North Carolina’s bathroom bill “a distraction from our real problems.”

In October of that year, he donated $1.25 million to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign through a combination of direct contributions to Trump’s campaign and Super PACs.

“A page in the book of history has turned, and there is an opening to think about some of our problems from a new perspective,” Thiel told The New York Times after the election. “I’ll try to help the president in any way I can.”

“What Trump represents isn’t crazy,” Thiel once remarked. “And it isn’t going away.”

After the election, reports circulated he would have a role in the Trump administration—as his tech advisor, a cabinet secretary, or even a Supreme Court justice. (He had applied for clerkships with Justices Scalia and Kennedy when he was younger.) But since the inauguration he's kept a pretty low profile.

Why was the ceremony held in Austria, where same-sex marriage still isn't legally recognized? Maybe Thiel wanted a preview of what it'd be like to be a gay man stripped of his civil rights.
