In the wake of the devastating shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School, youth activists across the U.S. are demonstrating in support of gun reform.

The National School Walkout, coordinated by the Women's March activists but led entirely by students, will see high schoolers walk out of their classes for 17 minutes at 10am today. The demonstration is meant to honor those lost to gun violence—and encourage lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws.

The March 14 date marks one month since the Parkland, FL, shooting, which claimed the lives of 17 students and faculty. Since the incident, a number of survivors have risen to prominence as gun reform advocates, including Emma González and David Hogg.

Though the walkouts aren't school-sanctioned, students and their families nationwide are supporting the endeavor.

"As parents, it's our job to teach our children to be confident, civically engaged citizens," writes Kathleen Wilson, mother to two daughters, for CNN. "My parents always emphasized the importance of civic engagement—hence my fervent support of our daughters' involvement in the walkout... I am counting on these teenagers to press forward with their peaceful civil disobedience until our lawmakers do their job."
