Third Miami Winter Party Attendee Dies From Coronavirus

At least 38 people who were at the festival have tested positive.

At least 38 people who attended the 2020 Miami Winter Party have tested positive for COVID-19, and now a third attendee has died from the virus.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Thom Carr, a 67-year-old real-estate agent and classical pianist from Fort Lauderdale, has passed away due to complications from COVID-19.

“It is with overwhelming sadness that I share that our journey together has come to an end,” Carr’s husband, J. Heider, wrote on Facebook. “For now, the parties, the cruises, the costume planning and trips together have come to an end. My memories from 35 years together, however, will never end. Over the years and especially at this terrible time for the world, Thom brought us joy, music, his special creativity and talents. For that we can be grateful.”

Heider and Carr both tested positive for COVID-19. Heider recovered, but Carr, a diabetic, went to the hospital on March 23 and was quickly admitted to the intensive-care unit.

“Our entire community will share in the remorse over his passing,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, a longtime friend of the couple. “His struggle to live equaled the passion he followed in life. He will be missed.”

The two previous Winter Party attendees who died from COVID-19 were Miami resident Israel Carreras, 40, and Ron Rich, 65, who was a volunteer at the festival.

Amid cancellations or postponements of major events like SXSW and Coachella, this year’s Winter Party went on as scheduled March 4–10. An estimated 5,500 people attended the weeklong festival.

Educational posters about COVID-19 prevention were reportedly placed throughout the venue, and 10,000 hand sanitizers were handed out to the crowd.
