"God Looked Away" Groomed For Broadway With Al Pacino As Tennessee Williams

With Garrett Clayton as his boy toy.

Tennessee Williams was as fascinating, complex and troubled as the characters he brought to the stage. Dotson Rader's God Looked Away, now at L.A.'s Pasadena Playhouse, sees Al Pacino as the iconic playwright in decline, in the days before the premiere of what will ultimately be his last work, A House Not Meant to Stand.

Drawing from Rader’s 1985 memoir, Tennessee: Cry of the Heart, about his friendship with Williams, the play co-stars stage queen Judith Light as Williams' confidante Estelle, and Garrett Clayton, who plays his “rental companion,” Luke.

“Tennessee brought to the world a lot of truths that no one was able to say,” Rader told The L.A. Times.

“His plays talked about everything from homosexuality to drug addiction to cannibalism to incest, you name it. He wrote the truth. And hopefully, in some tiny little way, we can do that again, in writing about his life.”

Directed by Robert Allan Ackerman, the six-week engagement runs through March 19 as the debut production in the Playhouse's new works program. While Ackerman says God is a still in development, Playbill reports the show is being prepped for a transfer to Broadway.

God Looked Away is at the Pasadena Playhouse through March 19.
