John Cameron Mitchell and Michelle Visage Drag Out the Vote in Georgia

Along with some "Drag Race" legends and... Glenn Close?!

The presidential election may be over, but there's still one major race left to determine who controls the U.S. Senate: the Georgia special runoff election on January 5.

The worlds of politics and drag have collided over the past few years. RuPaul’s Drag Race now ends every episode with queens carrying signs urging viewers to register to vote, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren had a booth at last year’s RuPaul’s DragCon NYC. Earlier this year, bestselling author and speaker Jackie Huba also founded Drag Out the Vote, a movement enlisting drag queen ambassadors to help people register to vote.

Drag Out the Vote has now unveiled a new voter initiative: Georgia Runoff Textoff, a text-bank drag show set to mobilize voters in the peach state. What's more, some pretty big stars are taking part.

Drag Out the Vote

"Given the significance and immediacy of Georgia's special runoff election, the team at Drag Out The Vote knew it was time to roll up our sleeves, touch up our lipgloss, and get ready to help Georgia voters sashay to the polls in January," Huba said in a statement. "With no time to waste, our team has worked to turn around this event to truly demonstrate that our work is not done—we’re utilizing the art and activism of drag into 2021 and beyond because every election is critical."

The Georgia Runoff Textoff will be co-hosted by ultimate RuPaul's Drag Race squirrel friend Michelle Visage and Hedwig and the Angry Inch star John Cameron Mitchell.

"I didn’t want to kick myself for not doing what I can to finish the amazing work these organizations are doing to register voters, and show the world that Georgia is an amazingly diverse state with a rich history and an even richer future!” Mitchell added.

The event will also feature performances from Drag Race legends like Alaska, Jinkx Monsoon, Sasha Velour, Peppermint, and Brita Filter. Mitchell will be performing a song from Hedwig & the Inch with Stephen Trask, who composed and wrote lyrics for Hedwig.

Other famous faces slated to appear include Glenn Close, Patti Lupone, and Sam Park, the first openly gay man to be elected to the state legislature in Georgia.

“Community and Democracy only truly function when everyone is allowed to fully participate. In my work at the New Georgia Project and as a Drag Ambassador for Drag Out the Vote, we hold space for and celebrate queer magic. It’s a beautiful thing when people can use their art to build power for their communities,” said Bentley Hudgins, political strategist for The New Georgia Project.

The Georgia Runoff Textoff drag show is by RSVP only and will be hosted via Zoom on Sunday, December 13 at 5pm ET. The volunteer event is free, but spots are "limited and will go quickly." Head over to the Drag Out the Vote website for more info.
